Set amid the burgeoning American literary society of 1850s New England, the novel explores Herman Melville’s relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne and how it transformed his masterpiece, Moby-Dick, which Melville dedicated to Hawthorne. Beauregard’s fictional narrative delves behind that dedication based on extensive historical research including the study of the real letters and journals.
