Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(people chattering) - My name is Amanda Whitesinger and I am Navajo.
Growing up, we were connected to the land.
We respect the land.
I have a vivid memory of when I was younger, played with my cousins at my grandma's.
When one of us would fall, she would always come over, dust us off and then she would spit on the ground.
And that was just her way of apologizing, because we don't disrupt Mother Earth.
And so having that connection and realizing that we're all connected, not just to the land, to the plants, to the animals, and that we're just a part of it.
I was taught that we don't own the land, It's not how we measure our wealth And that we are only here for a certain amount of time, and it's one of our duties to honor and respect the land for future generations so that our people can continue to inhabit that land.
