So far, there are no reported cases of the human infection of H5N1 in the state, But the virus has been detected in wild birds here in the state, and officials in Wall Township say they suspect avian flu could be responsible for the deaths of about 30 waterfowl found on the banks of Shark River in Monmouth County this month.
The State Department of Environmental Protection has been tracking an outbreak of wild bird deaths due to the avian flu since late December.
The department tells NJ Spotlight News it's received reports about the bird deaths in Monmouth County and may test the carcasses for the virus, but say it's too early to verify if it was a cause of death.
Officials here are also taking precautions after New York City and surrounding counties closed all live bird markets after avian flu was detected.
Live bird markets in Jersey had been asked to do voluntary cleanings and disinfection to prevent the virus from spreading here.
There are currently no reported cases of the virus in domestic poultry or cattle in New Jersey.
