Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(group chattering) - My name is Deb Stone and I'm a member of the deaf community.
My entire family is deaf, including my parents and grandparents.
It's hereditary in our family, and my children are also deaf.
Deaf people are like other large cultural groups.
We have the right to live, the right to work.
We have the ability to raise a family.
There's so many similarities, except the fact that we can't hear.
If a non-deaf person meets a deaf person who speaks well and can maybe hear a little bit, they might assume that that's the case for all deaf people when it's not.
So it's best to ask them what their preferred method of communication is and to go from there.
Sometimes I will ask someone to view me as a person who speaks a different language and not as a disabled person.
So keep an open heart and an open mind.
