Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is urging the U.S. to spend more on defense and to do more to strengthen relationships with its allies.
Senator McConnell spoke this morning to the center for Strategic International Studies in Washington, D.C. he said that defense spending as a percentage of the gross domestic product is a fraction of what it used to be.
And he rejected talk that America is better off, quote, going it alone rather than working with allies.
There's no question that our adversaries are working hard to split America and its European allies.
If we're making their job easier and we're doing them wrong.
Search history begs us to recall we don't get to pick and choose which complex will threaten our interests, for how long they will live, and we will rely on our friends to help us to deter and contain aggression in the coming years.
From the Indo-Pacific to Eastern Europe.
Going it alone will only increase costs for taxpayers and risk to our warfighters.
We should be working more closely with our allies worldwide to protect our economies and supply chains from the PRC.
If we push these trends away, we should expect them to keep buying.
You shouldn't expect them to keep buying.
American.
Senator McConnell also urged continued U.S. support of Ukraine.
He said if Russia defeats Ukraine, it would be a loss for the U.S. and other nations would perceive it as a sign of America's lack of resolve.
