Tensions continue to boil in Paterson over the fatal shooting by police of Najee Seabrooks, a violence interventionist, after a standoff on March 3. Community activists held a protest Thursday as the state attorney general's office released footage from police body-worn cameras that showed the hours-long standoff between police and Seabrooks after a 911 call of someone in distress.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipgood evening and thanks for joining us this Friday night I'm Raven Santana in for Brianna vanozie new developments tonight police body camera footage and 9-1-1 calls have been released by The State Attorney General's office this after Patterson police shot and killed Naji Seabrooks who was having a mental health crisis the video is graphic and shows police standing outside his apartment bathroom in a standoff where in his final moments officers were heard asking him to put down the knives after an almost five hour standoff Seabrooks was shot and killed when he emerged from the bathroom with a knife the tapes were released as protesters gathered to demand Justice for their friend and neighbor and member of the Patterson Healing Collective no comment today from the mayor of Patterson who has been calling for their release but the Attorney General's office ensuring family and friends that there is an investigation into the shooting underway Advocates want the officers involved fired and sent to jail Melissa Rose Cooper reports how much much racist racing drama must black people have to take tensions boiling in Patterson as the community continues to demand Justice for Najee Seabrooks put the knives on the floor nobody's gonna shoot you man nobody will shoot you all right the protest Gathering yesterday as the State Attorney General's office released the body cam footage showing the hours-long standoff between Seabrooks and police after responding to a call of someone in distress here you can see an officer holding up a gun while telling Seabrooks to drop a knife and come out the bathroom you want to hear that he had a knife but what you don't do in the military of Crisis you do not bring a gun to a knife fight police arrived to the apartment where Seabrooks had barricaded himself in a room just before 8 A.M on March 3rd yeah Vicky it's Ramos Seabrooks can be heard responding to the officer but he seems to question whether they are there to really help minutes later another officer can be heard asking him to come out on his own free will or saying they'll have to take a different route not here to play games with you a woman who says she's his mother also tries to get Seabrooks to come out but no luck see Brooks's mother eventually tells an officer that her son works for the Patterson Healing Collective members of the organization are trained in Crisis Intervention tactics but according to activists they weren't allowed access or to help he texts them and asked them to be there they were there they asked the police knows them they have de-escalated situations together this was not unknown quantity all they had to do was let them talk to not g we will not broadcast the gruesome shooting but according to the Attorney General's office two officers fired their guns after seabrook's lunch at them with a knife the body cam footage shows him being treated on the scene before he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead Community leaders stand firm seabrook's death could have been avoided he should have never came out in a body bag or came out on a stretcher in handcuffs he should have came out hugging the members of the past Healing Collective who is out there since the very beginning the people that he called for help the resource was there in the past the police department ignored it now loved ones and members of the community are calling for a federal investigation citing a history of misconduct by Patterson Police it has been incidents like uh police shooting fatal shooting has happened previously in Syria Patterson so so that's this is a concern for the cities a spokesperson from the U.S attorney's Office responded saying while the U.S attorney's Office does not comment on individual investigations the office is strongly committed to the enforcement of civil rights including constitutional policing practices a Patterson police officer shot Khalif Cooper who was unarmed in the back and now is paralyzed a Patterson police officer shot and killed Thelonious McKnight who was unarmed Patterson Police Beat and killed Jamie Lowry while he was in police custody during a medical emergency sure don't tell me that these are patterns don't tell me that these are in practices the Attorney General's office confirms the Office of Public integrity and accountability is investigating the shooting loved ones and Community Advocates say the only Justice they want to see is the police officers who shot Seabrooks fired and sent to jail holding officers accountable so no one else's life has to be taken too soon for NJ Spotlight news I'm Melissa Rose Cooper [Music÷}
