Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipTurning to national politics, US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky's senior senator, continues to make the case for continued U.S. support of Ukraine.
McConnell was in Shelbyville yesterday.
His position on Ukraine puts him at odds with many of his fellow Republicans.
This war is not taking a single American life.
We're not involved directly in the war.
We're trying to help these brave people stand up for their own independence.
And this is unified the democratic world against the real challenges that we have, which in my view, are the greatest sense of Berlin Wall came down.
We've got the Russians acting like they did during the Soviet period.
We've got the Chinese who have evolved from a tough commercial competitor into a national security threat.
And you've got Iran sitting there funding all of these groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, who live there shooting at us as well.
So there are two approaches you can take here.
My friends, you can say, well, I'll just keep my head down and maybe everything will be okay.
Or you can stand up to it.
It may not be fashionable now, but I'm a Ronald Reagan Republican.
Peace through strength, 60 billion.
But Kentucky's junior U.S. senator, Rand Paul, has been a chief critic of sending money to Ukraine.
But McConnell says that line of thinking is wrong.
But I have a great passion for trying to help do everything I can to push back against the notion that somehow this is not in America's interest to be the leader of the democratic world.
Things don't work well if we are not in the leadership position.
There are after us and our allies and without our leadership that could possibly succeed.
McConnell recently announced he'll be stepping down from his post as Senate Republican leader at the end of his leadership term.
He was asked about a replacement for the position.
McConnell said he doesn't have a preference, but expects he will have a good successor.
I think we'll have a good.
