But one scary story out of Mead County isn't just Halloween and fun.
It's history.
This weekend and Brandenburg, they celebrated that history at the second annual Battle Town.
Which festival?
Which festival will take you there and tell you the true story of the battle Town, which.
Suffered short shrift in the public system as the second place to look.
I'm talking to you a school.
So you're going to winners.
We concluded that the ghost in our school mostly only Mark.
I was the last of the generation who knew the stories, who knew about this.
Mark and I wanted to preserve those stories so they would never be lost because it's part of our history.
The stories of Lee as Mark has come down verbally through the generations.
My uncle was the historian of Lee, a smock.
He knew the stories as they were passed down through his family.
His great grandfather was only a year and a month older than Lee is.
Mark.
This is Lee is Mark's mom and dad.
George told it.
She was seen in the woods a lot alone.
But I think it was because she had kind of been ostracized from the community.
A man had bought a team of horses and as Lee loved animals, she wanted to pet the horses.
And the man who owned the horses told her, no, she could not touch the horses.
But she managed to get close enough and she rubbed the nose of one of the horses.
The man became very angry and shoved her away and the next morning, the horse died and they blamed Leah for it.
These are the tools that my father in law found only a small grave back in 1937.
The people in that area at that time were farmers or Coopers.
They made barrels.
The neighbor's barrels all began to fall apart, and they blamed Lydia for their barrel falling apart.
And that was their livelihood.
And I think or I believe that they became so fearful of Lee that their only solution was to burn the witch.
There have been many sightings in the 1950s, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, and even in the 2000s of Leah's apparition.
Every sighting was exactly the same.
She had long, dark hair, a long white dress, black ties around her waist or wrist and she was always seen just floating in the air.
We really see her as a friend because she was somebody that we would all be friends with.
Now if she was here.
So that's why we we do what we do with Celia as a friend.
Hunters, they cannot kill a game in that area.
They will shoot and miss.
They can't and they cannot kill Deer, squirrels, rabbits.
They.
They can't.
They?
I guess Lee is protecting the animals.
We saw how many people went to nightmare, forced and filled with screams.
And we're like, There's a lot of people that come here for Halloween, so let's do something that is Holy Meat County for Halloween.
We're going from 2500 to 5000 people, which we find very, very exciting considering that we are in the second year of our festival.
There are people that are going to stay the night.
There are people that are going to buy fuel, visit other vendors, things like that.
And on top of all the different small businesses that are located inside the festival, we have kind of around $500,000, which is going to be the economic impact in the local area for the people visiting the festival.
It's a celebration of Lee's life.
The truth and the history of Battle Town.
To quote my father in law, it's not a story.
It's history.
It's battle town history.
And fascinating history, indeed.
For those who may want to visit Leah's grave, we want to note that it is on private property and visitors are no longer allowed made.
County tourism officials say a great way to honor Leah is to donate to a local animal shelter and, of course, visit next year's festival.
