Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Did a word that's important to you go missing?
- And now all you can feel, do or think, is the opposite of that word?
- Then call us, I'm Sly.
- And I'm Gabby, we're Word Detectives and we solve... - [Sly and Gabby] Word Mysteries.
- Together we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.
- We'll find your missing word fast.
- Not to mention briskly.
- And swiftly.
- Yeah, we're really good with words.
- [Sly and Gabby] "Wordsville!"
- Gabby, do you know what time it is?
- Time for Vet Wilder's summer potluck picnic.
I am so ready.
- It's a perfect day.
The sun is out the birds are... Brrr, why am I feeling cold all of a sudden?
- I feel it too.
Sly, it just started snowing outside my window.
- Snow in summer?
It makes no sense.
(computer ringing) - It's Baker Graham calling.
I have a feeling this is a word mystery, a very cold one.
(computer ringing) - Word Detectives, my sign is gone.
This one.
(computer clicks) - [Sly] Why does your sign say scorching?
- I use it to warn people when hot baked goods come out of the oven.
Also, I realize you're not weather detectives, but why is it snowing?
- I have a hunch why.
Scorching doesn't mean hot, it means extremely hot.
- And without that word scorching, Wordsville has turned extremely cold, frigid and frozen.
- It's definitely a word mystery.
Tell us everything that happened and I'll animate it and try to stay warm.
Recap time.
- [Baker Graham] I'd just put my sign next to the scorching apple pie (computer clicking) I baked for Vet Wilder's Summer Potluck Picnic.
That's when Firefighter Ember came by to give me a ride, but I wasn't ready because the pie tin was way too hot to carry.
(computer clicks) Then Vet Wilder showed up asking if we were ready to go.
He doesn't like when people are late.
They were both impatient.
So I went to look for a bag I can safely carry the scorching pie tin.
But when I came back they were gone and so was my sign.
- Baker Graham, can you show us the scene of the mystery?
- Of course, here's where I last saw my scorching sign.
- [Sly] I'm saving this screenshot for our case notes.
(camera clicks) - [Gabby] and I'm gonna go grab a scarf.
- Good idea, we're on it.
- [Sly and Gabby and Baker Graham] Bye.
- Time to start our case notes.
- But first warmer clothes.
(upbeat music) - [Gabby] Hurry, sly.
- I'm coming, be right there, ah.
- Much better, now back to business.
- We know what happened.
(computer clicks) Someone took Baker Graham's scorching sign.
- And now the town of Wordsville is the opposite of scorching.
(computer clicks) - The bakery is where it happened.
- When Baker Graham went to find a bag to carry the scorching hot pie.
- So he could take the pie to the potluck picnic with Firefighter Ember (computer clicks) and Vet Wilder.
- Their our suspects, but we have to figure out who did it, how and why.
(computer clicks) - Let's look at the clues.
(computer clicks) - Beach ball and those look like Firefighter Ember's safety goggles.
Let's call her.
(computer ringing) - Word Detectives, judging by your winter outfits, it's cold there, too.
- Freezing, it's because Baker Graham's scorching sign is missing.
- He told us you were at the bakery earlier to pick him up.
- And that you were impatient.
- Well, a bit, but only because I wanted to get to the picnic before a fire emergency called me away.
- Does that happen a lot?
- Yes, I always end up having to leave early.
I like helping people, (pen scratching) but it's still hard to miss out.
Like that time when I missed singer Melody's Sing-a-thon, or Athlete Glory's Marathon-a-thon.
- Did you see the scorching sign?
- I did, Baker Graham didn't want me to burn my hand on the scorching hot apple pie tin.
That's when Vet Wilder arrived (computer clicks) asking if we were ready to go.
Next thing I knew, Baker Graham ran to the back and I didn't want to upset Vet Wilder by being late, so I decided to go.
- Did you leave anything behind?
- Nothing I would need.
Talk later.
(computer phone beeps) - Hmm, Firefighter Ember didn't wanna get called away from the potluck picnic.
- So did she take the sign on her way out or was it Vet Wilder?
- Let's give him a call.
(computer ringing) - Hello, Word Detectives.
- Vet Wilder, are you knitting?
- Yes, the animals in my clinic are cold, so I'm knitting tiny sweaters.
This one's for Sammy the Snake.
- We heard you were being impatient at the bakery.
- Can you blame me?
I didn't want anyone to be late to my summer potluck picnic.
I was ready to play beach ball volleyball.
- I love that game.
- Me too, not that it matters.
I left my beach ball somewhere, plus it got so cold out (pen scratching) that I had to postpone my picnic.
- And did you happen to see Baker Graham's scorching sign?
- Yes, right next to the hot apple pie.
Baker Graham said it wasn't just hot, it was blistering hot.
(computer clicks) Before I knew it, Baker Graham went to the back to go look for something and that's when I left.
- How come?
- I couldn't be late to my own picnic.
Anyhow, I should really finish knitting this sweater.
Sammy's a very long snake.
- So we know Vet Wilder saw the sign and he left because Baker Graham wasn't ready to go.
- Did he take the scorching sign to cool the pie and hurry everyone up?
- Maybe, let's go over the case notes.
(computer clicks) Both our suspects had a reason to take the scorching sign.
- Firefighter Ember could have taken the sign to make the pie cool down more quickly.
- That way she could go to the picnic before a fire emergency (computer clicks) called her away.
- But Vet Wilder could have taken it too.
- True, he didn't want Baker Graham to be late to his potluck picnic.
- We should look at the clues again.
(computer clicks) - [Gabby] The beach ball is probably Vet Wilder's.
He said he doesn't know where he left his.
- [Sly] And Firefighter Ember left her safety goggles behind.
- She also said she didn't leave anything behind she would need.
(computer clicks) - And she wouldn't need her goggles if there were no fire emergencies.
- We just solved it, Sly.
It's time to reveal who did it, how and why.
(computer rings) - Now, presenting the Word Mystery animated reenactment of, "The Case of the Chilly Crowd."
- [Sly] Baker Graham, we need to get to the summer potluck picnic right away.
- [Gabby] Sorry, but we have to wait for the scorching hot apple pie to cool.
- [Sly] my summer potluck picnic is about to start.
You can't be late.
- [Gabby] Let me see what I can do.
- [Sly] I can't ask people not to be late and be late myself, I need to go.
- [Gabby] If Baker Graham doesn't hurry, I'll probably miss the picnic too, unless.
Firefighter Ember is who did it.
- She grabbed the sign when she was alone in the bakery.
- That's how she did it.
- But why?
- I really wanted to go to the picnic and I thought if I took the word scorching, I could cool down the pie and avoid getting called on a scorching hot fire emergency.
- That does happen a lot.
We're very thankful for firefighters like you.
- But I ruined your picnic by making it freezing cold.
And even though fire is bad when it gets out of control, we need it for cooking and cozy camp outs.
So I'm returning the sign, even if it means I can't stay at the picnic.
- I have an idea that might help.
(computer ringing) - Thanks for returning my scorching sign.
I'm sorry you get called away from fun events, Firefighter Ember.
- And that brings me to my idea.
My potluck picnic is now an all day event.
So drop in whenever you like.
It doesn't matter if you're late, or if you get called away early, the important thing is that everyone gets a chance to come.
- That's perfect, I'll get to party and do my firefighter duty.
- [Group] Thanks, Word Detectives.
- "The Case of the Chilly Crowd," is officially closed.
- Picnic time.
