Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Did a word that's important to you go missing?
- And now all you can feel, do, or think is the opposite of that word?
- Then call us!
I'm Sly.
- And I'm Gabby.
We're word detectives and we solve- - [Both] Word mysteries!
- Together we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.
- We'll find your missing word fast.
- Not to mention briskly.
- And swiftly!
- Yeah, we're really good with words.
- [Children] Wordsville!
- Oh!
Baker Graham's newest tart.
This is gonna be amazing!
Ready to try Gabby?
- [Both] Three, two, one!
Um.
What?
- Lemon and chocolate?
- I know what I think about this tart, so why can't I say it?
- I also have thoughts that I can't say out loud.
Weird.
Is this a... - Word mystery?
I think so.
- Word Detectives, what do you think of this new sign for my vet clinic?
- [Both] Uh... - Not you too.
Ugh.
Every time I ask someone what they think of my new sign, I get the same confused answers.
- How long has this been happening?
- Ever since my feedback box went missing.
See?
- [Sly] So the word feedback is missing.
- Feedback is when you share your opinion about how well something is working.
- Is this why we can't say what we think about Baker Graham's new tart?
- It must be.
Feedback can be things you like or don't like.
- That's why I made my feedback box, to get helpful ideas on how to make my vet clinic sign better.
- We'll solve this word mystery.
Tell us what happened and Sly will animate it.
- [Sly] Recap time!
- [Vet Wilder] I just finished doing an interview for Reporter Read about Sully, my new rescue skunk when Baker Graham dropped off the tarts for us to try.
Before we tried the tarts, I took the chance to ask for feedback on my new clinic sign.
I gave them pieces of paper to write their opinions.
They grabbed my tart and left the room so they could put their honest feedback in the box.
When I came back, both of them and my feedback box were gone!
- Thanks, Vet Wilder.
Now can you show us the scene of the mystery, please?
- The feedback box is right over here.
- [Sly] I'll take a screenshot.
- Vet Wilder, we'll solve this case so your sign will get the feedback it deserves.
- Bye.
- Case notes time.
- [Gabby] What happened is someone took Vet Wilder's feedback box and now we can't say what we like or don't like about anything.
- [Sly] And we know where it happened, at the Wilder's Clinic, and it happened when he left the room and our suspects are Reporter Read and Baker Graham.
- Now we have to figure out who did it, how, and why.
- Let's look at the clues.
- [Gabby] There's a tart with a bite taken out of it.
- [Sly] And a blank feedback paper with a chocolate thumbprint on it.
- Since Baker Graham made the tarts, let's interview him first.
- Word Detectives, I'm whipping up some of my new tart.
The choco-lemon extravaganza!
People say they are indescribable.
- Yep, that's the only way to put it!
- We can't describe what we like or don't like about your tarts because the word feedback is missing.
- Oh, that's too bad.
- Huh, we saw a paper at the vet clinic with the same chocolate thumbprint on it as your apron.
- Oh, that's because Vet Wilder gave me this piece of paper to write my feedback on, but I didn't wanna write any criticism.
- What's criticism?
- The same thing is feedback.
What you say when you don't like something.
- Feedback can be what you do like about something too, Baker Graham.
- I'm not sure that's true.
Besides, hearing what people don't like can hurt someone's feelings.
- It shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings if it's constructive criticism.
- What's that?
- That's when you nicely explain why you don't like something to make it better.
- Still sounds hurtful to me.
But if you'll excuse me, Word Detectives, I have more tarts to make.
- The tart!
Baker Graham, at the vet clinic, we saw a tart with one bite taken and- - I make tarts.
I don't make people eat them.
- He seems super sour.
Think he ate too many lemons?
- Maybe.
Baker Graham doesn't think feedback can be positive.
- And he doesn't like any kind of criticism.
- I hope he can handle my feedback when we finally solve this case.
- Let's call Reporter Read.
- Hi Word Detectives.
What do you think of this headline?
"Skunk Smell"?
- What?
- I had a feeling that's what you would say.
I'm writing a report on Vet Wilder's rescue skunk and I know something's wrong with the headline, but I don't know what.
- That's probably because the word feedback is missing.
- Well, that makes sense!
I need feedback on what I write in my reports to make sure they're clear, fair and honest.
But sometimes when I give people my feedback, I can be too honest and hurt their feelings.
- That can be a problem with feedback.
- Which reminds me, we found a tart with one bite out of it at the vet clinic.
Is it yours?
- Yes.
I have a one bite rule.
It means I'll try a bite of anything.
If I like it, I'll have more.
If I don't like it, I'll stop.
- What happened after your one bite?
- I stopped and it really hurt Baker Graham's feelings.
He didn't even give me a chance to say anything!
After I upset him, I didn't wanna risk upsetting Vet Wilder with my feedback on his sign.
I should finish my report.
Talk later.
- We should take another look at our case notes.
What did we learn?
- [Gabby] That Baker Graham doesn't like feedback.
- [Sly] And Reporter Read needs feedback.
- [Gabby] But she didn't wanna upset Vet Wilder after she upset Baker Graham.
- Wait, Reporter Read didn't say anything about the tart.
- You're right, she just stopped eating it.
But Baker Graham still got hurt.
- Taking the word feedback wouldn't change that.
- Which means only one person could have committed this word mystery.
- Let's show them who, how and why!
Now presenting the word mystery animated reenactment of the case of the missing feedback.
Here, have a taste of my new tart.
- Sure, I'll try one bite, but I'll eat more only if I like it.
- I'll try too, but only if you give me your feedback on my new sign!
I'll give you two space so you can give your honest feedback.
- You had only one bite.
It's obvious you don't like it.
- Can I tell you what I think?
- No, you hurt my feelings!
I don't like criticism.
You should go and so should this feedback box.
Baker Graham is who did it.
- Baker Graham, how could you?
- When everyone left the room, he grabbed the feedback box.
That's how.
- He thinks feedback is always negative.
- And he was hurt Reporter Read only ate one bite of his new tart.
- Reporter Read made me feel like I did a bad job, which is how I always feel when I get criticism.
So I took Vet Wilder's feedback box and that's why I did it.
- But feedback can be helpful.
Why don't you return my feedback box and we'll show you?
- Fine.
- Feedback has been returned!
- Baker Graham, your tarts have a tasty crust, but they're a bit sour.
- That's how I felt too, but I didn't get a chance to say it.
- Oh.
Hearing that feedback wasn't so bad.
Now I know what to fix.
I get it now!
I'm sorry for taking the feedback box.
- It's okay.
I'm glad you see how helpful feedback and constructive criticism can be.
Now back to my new sign.
Thoughts, feelings, ideas?
- Why is the puppy a pirate?
- It should be a kitten.
- It should be a snake!
- No, wait.
A basket of kittens.
All the kittens!
- I really like horses.
- Well, you did ask for feedback.
- True.
- [All] Thanks Word Detectives!
- Oh, what about a pig?
- I still think I like the snake.
