Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Did a word that's important to you go missing?
- And now all you can feel, do or think is the opposite of that word?
- Then call us.
I'm Sly.
- And I'm Gabby.
We're Word Detectives and we solve - word mysteries!
- Word mysteries!
Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.
We'll find your missing word fast.
- Not to mention press briskly.
- And swiftly.
- Yeah, we're really good with words.
- [Both] Wordsville!
- See, my chair can go pretty low.
- Cool.
Are you coming back up?
- My chair is stuck.
(chair clanking) I can't change the position.
Oh, do you think that's a word mystery?
- I think your chair's just broken.
(phone ringing) - Then why is Singer Melody calling?
- Word Detectives, I... Are you okay, Word Detective Sly?
- I'm comfy down here.
- If you say so.
Back to me.
I need your help.
I'm starring in a new movie musical, I had my costumes on a hanger with the label "Alter" on it.
See?
- [Sly] I do see.
- But now the word "Alter" is missing!
- "Alter means to change or adjust something so it's different than before."
- Exactly, and I need my costumes adjusted to fit me before I leave to shoot my movie.
But now the word "Alter" is gone and... - Nothing could get altered.
- So this is a word mystery.
- [Sly] And it must be why I can't adjust the position of my chair.
- But it's worse than not being able to adjust clothes or chairs.
- [Sly] What could possibly be worse?
- I wanted to go from just singing to singing and acting in movies.
But with the word "Alter" gone, I won't be able to make a change!
- [Sly] That is worse.
Tell us what happened, and I'll animate it.
Recap time!
- [Singer Melody] Scientist Cosmo's here testing the super hold formula hairspray I had asked him to make for me, when Baker Graham came in with my morning croissant.
That's when I told them I was leaving for Paris, France to star in a new movie musical.
They seemed shocked.
Then I showed them my costumes.
I left the room to get a photo of my co-star, a singing horse named Clementine.
when I came back, Scientist Cosmo, Baker Graham, and the "Alter" label were all gone.
- Intriguing.
Can you show us the scene of the mystery?
- Anything to help.
- [Sly] I'm taking a screenshot for our case notes.
We're on the case, Singer Melody.
- Thank you.
- Want me to open the case notes, Sly?
- No, I can reach just fine.
- [Gabby] We know what happened.
The word, "Alter," was taken off.
Singer Melody's costumes, and now nothing in town can be altered or adjusted.
- It happened once Singer Melody left to get a photo.
- And the recording studio is where it happened.
Baker Graham and Scientist Cosmo are our two suspects.
- Now we'll find out who, how and why.
Let's look at the clues.
From down here, it looks like some sort of schedule and a blow dryer.
- And from up here I'd say that's right.
- Let's call Baker Graham.
(phone ringing) - Oh, hi Word Detectives.
Feeling low, Word Detective Sly?
- It's just my chair.
I'm fine.
But you seem sad.
- Is it because you can't adjust your recipes, like take out almonds or add chocolate?
- I'm not sad, but I guess it is a bit annoying.
Every morning I have all the exact same routine.
I look at my recipes and I decide which ones I want to adjust.
- Do you do that before or after you bring Singer Melody a croissant?
- I don't normally bring it to her.
She usually comes to the bakery and we have a morning croissant break.
It's my favorite part of my morning routine, which I've all written down, somewhere.
- But today that routine changed.
- She was so excited about shooting a movie in Paris, so she forgot to come, which I totally understand, but, oh, where did I put that piece of paper I wrote my routine down on?
If I lost it, I'll be even more sad.
Not that I'm sad now.
Gotta go.
- He's obviously sad, right?
- Even I could see that from down here.
But he said he wasn't.
- Let's see if Scientist Cosmo can help us crack this case.
It's weird not seeing your neck.
(phone ringing) - Oh, hi Word Detectives.
I thought you'd be Singer Melody.
I'd ask what you're doing down there, but I'm in a bit of a hurry right now.
- Did you think Singer Melody was calling about your hairspray?
- My super hold formula hairspray to be precise.
We tested it earlier with a blow dryer and her hair didn't move an inch.
- Wow!
The hairstylist that's on Singer Melody's movie will love using it.
- I know.
My formula is safe and effective.
But no one should use more than one spritz.
If they do, it could glue Singer Melody's hair together.
- So you're saying you wouldn't want anyone to alter the amount used?
- Definitely not.
I came back to write down instructions on every bottle so it's clear no one should change the amount of hairspray to use.
Well, I better get back to it.
Singer Melody ordered a lot of bonds.
Bye!
- Let's open up the case notes.
Ah, my neck hurts from looking up at you.
- [Gabby] Baker Graham seemed bothered that he can't adjust his recipe.
- [Sly] While Scientist Cosmo was worried someone could alter how much hairspray used.
What did the clues tell us?
- [Gabby] Look, this paper says 8:00 AM Look over recipes, 9:00 AM Croissant break with Singer Melody, 10:00 AM Bake cupcakes.
- [Sly] That must be Baker Graham's morning routine.
- He did say the favorite part of his morning is his croissant break with Singer Melody.
- Now that she's leaving for Paris, his routine won't be the same.
- Sly, I think that's why he was sad.
- I think we just solved this case.
- Let's show them how it happened.
(phone ringing) - Now presenting the word mystery animated reenactment of, The Case of the Unaltered State.
- [Scientist Cosmo] Look, your hair isn't moving.
- [Singer Melody] Wow, this hairspray is perfect.
- [Baker Graham] Break time.
Singer Melody, you missed our morning croissant break.
- [Singer Melody] I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to alter our morning routine.
I was distracted by my big news.
I'm going to star in a movie musical.
Look at my beautiful movie costumes.
I need to alter them so they fit.
And you have to see a photo of my co-star, Clementine, the singing horse.
- [Scientist Cosmo] I can't let anyone spritz too much hairspray.
- [Baker Graham] If she can't alter her costumes, she can't alter my morning routine.
- Baker Graham is the one who did it!
- He snipped the "Alter" label from the costumes when he was alone in the recording studio.
- That's how.
- Because he didn't want his morning routine to be altered when Singer Melody left town.
- That's why!
- I'm sorry.
I took it.
- I can't believe it.
- I didn't want my morning routine to change.
Our croissant breaking time together was the best part of my day, but I didn't mean to make it so nothing in Wordsville could be altered.
I'll return your label right now.
(phone ringing) - I'm glad to have my "Alter" label back, but I'm sorry I made you sad, Baker Graham.
How about we have our croissant breaks in Paris?
I want you all to visit my movie set!
(all children exclaiming) - Wait, are there croissants in France and are they any good?
- I think we'll be fine.
- And I can make sure no one adjusts the amount of my super hold hairspray they use.
- [Melody, Graham and Cosmo] Thanks word detectives!
(chair creaking) - It's good to have you back to normal, chair.
(chair creaking) Did someone take the word "Alter" again?
- I think you just forgot to adjust the lever.
- Right, so Gabby, do you wanna see how high it can go?
- Ah, some things never change.
