-Hello, I'm Joyce DiDonato on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House where we're about to begin a performance of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece "Eugene Onegin."
And this is the home of Madame Larina, whose two daughters, Tatiana and Olga, will soon face momentous events that will change their lives forever.
When Tchaikovsky finished composing the opera, he wrote, "If ever music was written with pure passion, with love for the story and the characters in it, it is my music for 'Eugene Onegin.'"
Tchaikovsky was utterly enamored with Pushkin's tale of ill-timed love, in particular the character of the shy Tatiana, whose passionate inner life overflows into an infatuation with the aristocrat Onegin.
Today, we have the consummate artist Asmik Grigorian playing the role of Tatiana; the rising mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova plays her carefree sister Olga; and in a breakthrough portrayal, the young baritone Iurii Samoilov sings the dashing but callous title role of Onegin.
They are joined by the outstanding tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Onegin's friend, the sensitive poet Lenski, whose jealous love for Olga proves his undoing.
And in his successful Met debut, Maestro Timur Zangiev is ready to go to the pit and launch Tchaikovsky's sweeping score.
Here is "Eugene Onegin."
