Both my parents were very into music and the Grateful Dead and they were doing that for a long time in the eighties and following around that band.
And just through that and through my family I found a love of music.
My dad actually ended up running the Orpheum Flagstaff, which is a concert venue.
It's about a thousand capacity.
So I grew up going backstage and hanging out watching a bunch of sound checks for all these cool bands.
And then I started playing music myself when I was about nine.
And then I haven't stopped since then.
I've played most rock instruments, and have just been really enjoying playing the bass lately.
- Mine is not as cool.
I started playing cello when I was young, so I was not hanging out with the Grateful Dead folk, but you know, just grew up in, in symphonies.
Really didn't start playing folk music acoustic guitar until kind of college.
So it was a kind of late transition into songwriting.
I don't know if we ever talked about that before.
I think my, my favorite part of performing is probably the reason we, we come together.
I mean, the reason we go to a venue or the reason we play at a venue, there's a moment sometimes.
And sometimes you miss it.
But I think the, the goal of the night is to create this connection and that at that moment, kind of everybody is on the same page.
We've come to a place to do something.
Hopefully, you know, we can get that across the digital world right now, cuz you know, venues aren't, aren't showing every night right now.
But I think performing live music is, is that connection.
And at the end of the day.
- Yeah, I love the chaos that comes with performing and performing a different place.
Sometimes going to perform at different places every night when we're on tour and just kind of every day is a different adventure.
And you know, sometimes you play to a slim crowd and you make the most of the night and you end up friends with everybody in the venue or sometimes you have a show that's a hit and it just feels like there's a huge rush of energy when you hit the stage.
So I just enjoy, you know how different it can be in the chaos that comes with it.
- It is crazy.
- Yeah.
It's a crazy thing to do.
- Crazy job (laughs) - to have.
- Yeah.
I'd say one word to describe the Arizona music scene especially after this past couple years is "resilient."
I can't believe the artists that I've encountered how they've really just found ways to make art work for them in this past couple of years and to be able to still create and create good content.
And you know, every time you see 'em, even when things are tough and maybe you're not able to perform live as much, they're, they have their head up, they're writing new songs.
And when you talk about playing shows together, everybody's hopeful.
And I think that just shows a lot of resilience and they're staying tough.
It's tough, resilient, strong, hopeful.
- It's very Phoenix.
- I would say for a band or musician that was just starting, I would just say have fun and enjoy playing music as much as you can.
And especially in those first few years when you're really trying to get something off the ground.
And a lot of times when you're in a band you're with your friends you get caught up on the technicalities of, you know, money roles or the business side of things.
And really in those years just focus on making awesome music with your friends and enjoying every moment of it.
